Anime review: Owari no Seraph (Seraph of the End)

        Owari no Seraph

The first time I saw the name being mentioned was when I was looking through a list of anime that were going to be aired in the spring of 2015. From reading the description I could tell it might be interesting, but I wasn’t convinced yet. Not much later I found out that this anime was going to be produced by the same studios as Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan). So I thought this anime might be worth a shot after all. But I’m afraid from time to time some parts of Shingeki no Kyojin shine through in this series.

So what is Owari no Seraph about?

One day a weird virus appears in our world, that kills every person who gets infected. But that’s not the case for children of 13 years of age or younger. Around the same time vampires infiltrate the human world and make these residual children their slaves, so called “lifestocks”. Among these children is Hyakuya Yuuichirou, an orphan who lives in an orphanage with the other children, the Hyakuya orphanage.

One of the other children is Mikaela Hyakuya who he eventually manages to get along with. But Yuuichiro is scared to let people close to him and pretends not to care. Yuuichiro did however determine a goal for himself after everything that happened. Although he doesn’t have the opportunity to do so he wants to kill all the vampires so they pay for what they’ve done. He dreams of killing all of them.

For those of you who like tags, Owari no Seraph falls into the following categories Drama, Shounen, Vampire and Supernatural. Although I didn’t think Shounen really fits this anime after watching it.. It seems more like a Shoujo anime..

During the first episode the anime was able to grab my attention within 30 seconds. I got chills and the only thing that happened in those seconds was the appearance of both the virus and the vampires. The OST also stood out to me, because it sounded really good. It started off well! After I finished watching the first episode I came to the conclusion that I wanted to watch more. Weirdly enough all of the above mentioned things happen within that first episode, plus a few extras that make you want to continue watching. I expected this to take more time, but apparently it didn’t! What was this anime up to..?

In the next episode the story continues, now and then a few big hints are dropped about how it will continue. The anime is very predictable on a lot of points. Which is a shame, but it’s made such a way that you do still want to continue watching, which is very impressive. I might also just have a weakness for the character design, which definitely isn’t bad, in fact it is very appealing. The animation in Owari no Seraph is fine and wasn’t bothersome, there were a few moments where they action could’ve been better though. You can’t make it with just stationary images and shouting.

The last episode seems to be the start of a new chapter and there seems to be something going on tha no one’s aware of. What is happening in Owari no Seraph?! Don’t worry! Season 2 will start airing in October!

Owari no Seraph is also available for watching in English Dub, besides the Japanese version with English subtitles!
