Product Review: Picola Egg Rolls – Strawberry & Chocolate

These traditional Japanese snacks are made by Yamazaki Nabisco. They’re crunchy egg roll biscuits which are the perfect size for a small snack to enjoy during a little break. Picola are available in several flavours, but the ones I tried were: Strawberry and Chocolate.

Picola Strawberry Egg Rolls
Price:  ± €3,- for a package with 2 packs each containing 6 egg rolls

The egg roll, or rather cookie roll, reminded me of an ice cream cone. It was crispy and tasted just like an ice cream cone. The creamy pink chocolate layer had a strong strawberry flavour to it. The pink stripes on the egg roll were pretty and a nice indication of what flavour to expect. Overall they tasted like a crunchy ice cream cone with a thin layer of sweet, creamy, strawberry white chocolate.

Picola Chocolate Egg Rolls
Price:  ± €3,- for a package with 2 packs each containing 6 egg rolls

The cookie part of this one tasted the same as the strawberry one, its stripes were brown instead of pink which was a fun way to see it was chocolate flavoured. The bitter milk chocolate was creamy and there was only a thin layer of it. Just like the strawberry version this one tasted like a crunchy ice cream cone with a thin layer of sweet, creamy, chocolate, but this time milk chocolate.

The most distinctive feature on these egg rolls are the diagonal stripes, which differ in colour per flavour. From the pictures on the packaging I expected them to be filled with chocolate, instead the inside of the egg roll was just coated with a thin layer of it. Both of the flavours I tried were very sweet, I think they’d match well with a bitter drink to even things out. So maybe try them with some coffee or at least tea without sugar.
