After being away for a couple of years, the singer-songwriter Cuushe surprised fans with a comeback in the guise of a project named FEM. The name stands for Finite Element Method, a way of problem-solving by subdividing large into small. The first release for this project is the 7″ single Light, with the title track and alongside a remix by Brainfeeder artist IGLOOGHOST.
Cuushe wrote on her social media: “It has been 3 years since I stopped making music. I just wasn’t able to after my traumatic experience of being stalked and abused by a fellow musician. But I’m trying to get my life back. Little by little. Now I’m ready. It’s time to make noise again.” A few years ago, before she decided to take a break, she shared her experience with stalking, theft and harassment which was the cause for her to not make music anymore. 12th of June 2020 seemed to be a perfect day for the singer-songwriter to present her new project to the audience. According to record label FLAU, the project marks a change from Cuushe’s usual electronic dreamscapes, instead of stepping into the realm of guitars, bass and drums. The title song, Light, got shared around on streaming services on the 12th, the single with the two songs will be released on the 19th of June.
After a burglary in which Cuushe was left without her instruments and music, she was working on, the demo with the song Light on it seemed to be the only thing that wasn’t taken away from her. It is therefore also somewhat fitting that this song has become the starting shot of her new project FEM.
With the support of Evan Dorrian, a member of the Australian Avant-jazz quintet Tangents, on drums and keyboard, and the addition of guitars and the dreamy whispering voice of Cuushe does give the song Light still the dreamy feeling that we know of the singer-songwriter. Light is ultimately a gentle and soothing song that can lull you to sleep. A pleasant comeback for a musician that was sorely missed by many fans. Cuushe’s last release before her hiatus was Night Lines in 2015.
