Mora Mothaus is the name of an indie singer-songwriter based in Tokyo and active since the beginning of 2018. On the first day of 2020, Mora Mothaus released her first EP, titled Overture To A Dream. Consisting of 4 tracks and a bonus track, the EP is in total written, recorded and produced by the musician.

The singer-songwriter, singing in English to dreamy melodies, presents an otherworldly atmosphere with her emotional and angelic-like voice as a strong base. This release was a powerful start for the year for Mora Mothaus and the first track on the EP, Tail Eater, is inadvertently a fitting song describing 2020.

Tired of chasing yourself in circles
The wait is long yet life passes you by then it’s gone

This is how the musician describes her solo project Mora Mothaus: “Expression and emotionalism through melodies and distilled sound waves. Strange melodies and harmonies evoke nostalgia and explore the unspoken. Music that is near and far, light and dark. Songwriting that tells a human’s tale of the cosmos, past, future, dreams, apocalyptic sentimentalism that’s inevitable on the grand scheme of the universe.”

In July of this year, she performed at Nine Spices in Shinjuku during the event named GALLERY. There Mora Mothaus shared the stage with a couple of other music projects as alternative rock band Vanitas and hardcore emo band nu. This event was originally broadcasted live and Mora Mothaus shared the live archive of her performance at that event on her YouTube channel as a Christmas present, or as she describes it Mothmas.

The performance shares the dreamy atmosphere of the music Mora Mothaus produces with the fitting noise additions, with a moody light design and is completed by the virtual abstract film loops on the background made by VJ Kiyoshi Takanashi.

2020 has been a weird year and it is hoping that 2021 will be a better year for everyone. While a lot of countries are currently back in lockdown, the days have become longer for some because it is no longer filled by the daily routine or, on the contrary, with working from home.

If you are looking for the distraction, the more than 35 minutes long live archive by Mora Mothaus might be a good video to get your introduction to the intriguing musician.
