If you’re familiar with Japanese treats you’ll surely know about mochi. Sweet sticky rice, possibly a filling and flavouring are the components of mochi. These treats come in many flavours and although they used to be made during a special ceremony they are now mass-produced and widely available. Mochi can be found both with filling or without. Since there are so many flavours available be sure to try some in a flavour you think you’ll enjoy!

Bourbon – Mochi Chocolate – Rich Ganache
Price: ±€4,-

These mochi had a chewy outer layer and looked exactly like you’d expect from the image on the packaging. The filling was a bit bitter and had an almost alcoholic aftertaste to it. When it came to the filling I’d expected it to be creamy, but instead, it was a bit dry and even crumbled a little. Once you put it in your mouth the filling does become a bit creamier.

Bourbon – Mochi Chocolate – Chestnut (Mont Blanc)
Price: ±€4,-

When it came to these mochi I recognized a clear chestnut flavour to them. The outer layer of mochi had a neutral flavour, when eaten separately. The filling in the centre had a toaster flavour to it, it was slightly crumbly just like the previous mochi filling. Once you chew on this mochi the filling does become creamier and starts to melt in your mouth.

The packaging of these mochi looked very luxurious, because of its styling. Both had clear images on them that give a good indication of which flavours to expect. Each box had two packs with four mochi inside. The packs also included a wooden pick to get the mochi out of the containers. There was a small packet included in each pack to keep the mochi fresh, clearly marked to make sure no one tries to consume these.

Both kinds of mochi were chewy and sticky in texture, but tasted a bit bitter as well. I didn’t dislike these mochi, but I wouldn’t eat them again either. Maybe sweeter mochi, with fruit flavours for instance, suit my tastes a bit better. Regardless these mochi clearly both included the intended flavours, though I had expected a bit of a creamier filling looking at the packaging.

Have you ever tried mochi? What did you think?
